The foundation of relaxation massage β long gliding effleurage strokes, rhythmic kneading, and gentle joint movements release full-body tension and leave you deeply rested.
Swedish massage is the most widely practiced form of massage therapy in the Western world β and the foundation from which most other Western massage modalities evolved. Named for the systematic techniques codified in 19th-century Europe, Swedish massage uses five primary strokes: effleurage (long, gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading and lifting), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (circular pressure), and vibration.
Together, these techniques work the whole body in sequence, warming and relaxing each muscle group, improving circulation, calming the nervous system, and easing out the everyday tension that accumulates from work, stress, and sitting. Sessions are performed at a moderate, flowing pace that encourages the parasympathetic nervous system response β the physiological “rest and digest” state that is the opposite of stress.
Swedish massage is the ideal starting point for first-time massage clients. Most clients leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more relaxed than they have in weeks.
